Bing recently rolled out a new resigned layout that is much cleaner. One has to assume they are making more of a targeted approach to competing with Google not only functionality but with the clean look Google made famous. While Bing does not complete with Google right now, I think they are making strides to possibly (let me say it again…posssibly) doing so. While Google’s results are still superior and just plain ole better, Bing has promise.

Does Bing’s Changes Affect My SEO Strategy?

In my opinion, not yet. Most of our clients in Memphis and every where else for the matter would be advised to work a good SEO plan (white hat of course) for Google results. It’s 85% of the searches performed so it just makes sense to keep that plan in tact. We will keep our eye on Bing though and see if they get more aggressive with changes for the rest of the year.

If you would like to learn more about the new Bing, click here for a great article at Website Magazine.

I read something this week about email marketing (specifically about email list) that quite honestly made me have a paradigm shift of sorts. Dela Quist said, “Inactivity is normal activity,” he tells Ken Magill in an interview at the Magill Report. “Inactivity is the default position for consumers. Highly engaged people are outliers.” As a former Six Sigma Black Belt I know outliers is a fancy way of saying it’s rare, or it doesn’t happen much. Some email marketers get discouraged because they don’t get a huge response to each piece they send. But in reality, most consumers sit back unengaged until the timing is right for them to purchase the product or service. It might be next week, it might be next year. But you have to stay active so those inactive customers become engaged when they are ready, not you.

“What I do is not spamming! That’s what other companies do, not me.” I hear this quite often, nobody thinks what they send is spam but I would estimate at least half the time it is spam. At least that’s what I see when it comes to email marketing efforts here in the Memphis area. Understand, you can follow CAN-SPAM law and probably be ok as far as regulation is concerned, however, the piece can still be spam.

How to know if you are spamming people? Here’s the easiest way to answer that question (direct from Yahoo! Mail): ”To ensure that your email gets delivered to the inbox, simply send emails that users want.”

That’s it. Simple in theory but ask yourself are you really sending content or offers that people see value in? If not, they you are probably spamming people.

Our good friend Adam Baldridge, Esq. over at Baker Donelson law firm recently notified us that Canada is introducing tougher spam laws. U.S. owners may think this doesn’t affect them or their email marketing efforts. However this is a growing trend that will continue not only in Canada but in the U.S. as well.

Although Canada’s law doesn’t punish legitmate businesses with email list that:

The customer either went through a single or double opt in process

Have a list from legitimate business relationships

Here’s the exact text from the Canadian government website:

Legitimate businesses that use email to market their products to Canadians should not be negatively impacted by this law. The regime to allow for email marketing is based on a consumer opt-in approach, which stipulates that businesses must get consent prior to sending commercial email or have a pre-existing business relationship with a consumer.

The Bottom Line?

It’s hard putting together successful email campaigns. But don’t add to the problem for you (and everyone else) by subjecting yourself to potential liability. Understand what you’re doing and the results will pay off.

If you want to read the law, please click here.
